Surgery, also known as an operation or surgical procedure, is a medical specialty that involves using instrumental or manual techniques to treat and correct various medical conditions or injuries. Surgeons are medical professionals trained in surgical techniques and procedures.
The main goal of surgery is to diagnose, treat, or alleviate medical conditions that may not respond to non-invasive treatments.
VISION
To provide high quality surgical services with a steadfast commitment to patient safety, innovation, and compassionate care, through teamwork and adherence to standards of surgical nursing care.
MISSION
To create an environment where every surgical patient’s as well as surgical team member’s well-being is paramount, fostering trust and confidence in our services, making us the preferred choice for surgical interventions.
An operating room (OR), also known as an operating theatre or surgery suite, is a specialized facility within a hospital where surgical procedures are performed on patients. The primary purpose of an operating room is to provide a controlled and sterile environment for surgical teams to carry out various medical interventions, ranging from routine procedures to complex surgeries.
The theatre or operating room consists of;
Sterile Environment
Maintaining a sterile environment is crucial to minimize the risk of infections during surgical procedures. All surfaces, equipment, and personnel must adhere to strict sterilization protocols.
Operating Table
The operating table is a specialized platform on which the patient lies during surgery. It is adjustable to allow the surgeon and the team to position the patient optimally for the procedure.
Surgical Equipment
An OR is equipped with a wide array of surgical instruments and tools specific to different medical specialties. These instruments may include scalpels, forceps, retractors, clamps, and more.
Anesthesia Equipment
Anesthesia machines are used to administer and monitor anesthesia during the surgery. Anesthesiologists or nurse anesthetists are responsible for managing the patient’s sedation and overall well-being during the operation.
Operating Lights
Bright and adjustable lights are mounted above the operating table to provide adequate illumination, helping the surgical team see and work effectively.
Monitors and Equipment
Modern ORs are equipped with various monitors and specialized equipment to keep track of the patient’s vital signs, such as heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and others.
Scrub Area
Before entering the OR, surgical team members must scrub and don sterile surgical attire to minimize the introduction of contaminants.
